Three transfer students at Appalachian State University were awarded scholarships from the Tau Sigma National Honor Society in December 2018. Tau Sigma is an academic honor society designed specifically to recognize and promote the academic excellence and involvement of transfer students. The students, Nolan McDaniel, Holly Parsons and Gretchen Synk, are officers in the Gamma Nu chapter of Tau Sigma at Appalachian State.
Synk serves as Vice-President and was awarded $4,000.00. Sync transferred from State College of Florida, Manatee-Sarasota and is a Communication Sciences & Disorders major.
Synk plans to use her award towards tuition and study abroad. Parsons serves as President and was awarded $2,500.00. Parsons transferred from NC State University. Parsons is an Exercise Science major and graduating in May 2019. Parsons plans to use her award towards graduate school. McDaniel serves as Treasurer and was awarded $2,500.00. McDaniel transferred from McDowell Technical Community College. McDaniel is an Exercise Science major and graduating in May 2019. McDaniel plans to attend graduate school and will use his award towards tuition for his final semester at Appalachian.
The criteria for the scholarship includes academic excellence as well as demonstrated service to the local chapter, university and the community. The students received their scholarship awards in January 2019.
“These scholarship awards acknowledge the broad range of excellence from these students. They have demonstrated a serious commitment to academics, our campus community and the community beyond Appalachian State,” said Matt Huntanar, the advisor for Tau Sigma of Appalachian State.
Transfer students are eligible to join Tau Sigma by earning a 3.5 GPA or higher in their first full-time semester at App State. Eligible students must also transfer to App State with a minimum of 24.0 transferable credits. Each year about 25% of the incoming 1,700 transfer students qualify to join Tau Sigma. Approximately 100 students accept the invitation to join Tau Sigma and are inducted in the spring semester.
