Transfer Guides
Transfer Guides have been created for each major at Appalachian and are intended as an example of how a North Carolina community college student could complete an AA or AS transfer degree and then transfer.
Tips for utilizing the transfer guides:
- Some majors encourage students to transfer for the summer term and students should be advised to apply accordingly when compelting the admission application.
- Summer start majors: Visit our Transfer Guide webpage and if their major has a # indicator, students with a completed associate degree are strongly encouraged to start in the summer
- Due to course sequencing, some majors encourage students to complete 30 hours of coursework and then transfer. If the two year transfer degree is completed, the time to graduation will be extended.
- Transfer after 30 hours majors: Visit our Transfer Guide webpage and if their major has a + indicator, due to class sequencing students should consider transferring after 30 credits.
- If a specific course is not indicated, students are welcome to choose any course that meets their community college's transfer degree requirements.
- Major curriculums do change and students should refer back to the transfer guides oftern to review any updates.
- After transferring to Appalachian, students will work with an Appalachian advisor to develop an individual graduation plan.
Articulation Agreements
Articulation Agreements are formal agreements between two or more colleges and universities documenting the transfer policies for a specific academic program or degree in general.
Tips for assisting students completing aa AAS/AFA degree under an articualtion agreement:
- Generally, articualtion agreements DO NOT meet general education requirements.
- Refer to the agreement's course crosswalk to determine what courses will transfer to meet Appalachian's degree requirements (page 1 of the crosswalk) and what will need to be completed on Appalachian's campus (page 2 of the crosswalk).
- Due to University graduation requirements, students should only complete the courses in the AAS/AFA degree. All other courses, including general education, should be completed at Appalachian.
- It is the student's responsibility to inform Appalachian they are completing a degree under an articualtion agreement, prior to transferring.
Reverse Transfer
North Carolina's Reverse Transfer Program is a state initiative in which students are awarded credit they have already earned or will earn at the four year university. The program is designed to award an associate degree to students who previously attended a North Carolina Community College and fulfilled the associate degree requirements while working towards a bachelor’s degree at a North Carolina university.
- Appalachian advisors WILL NOT advise a student what classes they should take to complete another institution's degree requirements.
- Reverse Transfer is meant to award the two-year transfer degree, not complete general education requirements.
- Eligible students will receive a pop-up requesting participation when logging into their Appalnet account . Students will receive the pop-up three times before being force to either opt-in or not.
- Students should understand tranfer credit information is not sent automatically when the semester ends, but rather during scheduled down-laods throughout the year.
- Often times, students are informed they have complete their transfer degree before Appalachian is notified.
