Meeting General Education Requirements

Many students will have one or more General Education (GenEd) requirements left to complete when they arrive at Appalachian. However, there are several ways to meet these requirements.

Online through App State

  • Students in an App State Online program will be able to complete their GenEd requirements through online coursework.
  • Main Campus students may complete GenEd requirements through face-to-face and / or online coursework. Note: Main Campus students are not guaranteed a seat in all online sections so please communicate with your advisor for assistance with class selection and availability.

Through Face-to-Face Coursework

  • Main Campus students may complete their remaining GeEd requirements through face-to-face coursework.

Students may also complete GenEd requirements prior to beginning at Appalachian in one of the following ways.

From a North Carolina Community College

  • Associate in Arts (AA) with a grade of “C” or better in ALL of the core coursework
  • Associate in Science (AS) with a grade of “C” or better in ALL of the core coursework
  • Associate in Arts in Teacher Prep (AATP) with a GPA of 2.7 or higher and a grade of C or better in all AATP coursework
  • Associate in Science in Teacher Prep (ASTP) with a GPA of 2.7 or higher and a grade of C or better in all ASTP coursework
  • Transfer Core Diploma

Visit our General Education Programs of Study page and review our North Carolina Community College Transfer Equivalency General Education Program of Study checksheet for detailed information on where specific NCCC courses fit into the AppState General Education program.

Note: Students must apply to graduate at the community college in order for the diploma or degree to be denoted on the transcript. A final transcript needs to be sent to Appalachian with the diploma or degree posted.

The Associate in Applied Science (AAS), Associate in General Education (AGE), and Associate in Fine Arts (AFA) degrees do not meet Appalachian's General Education requirements.

All Associate in Arts and Associate in Science degrees from a North Carolina Community College prior to 1997 will require validation by the General Education Office to meet General Education requirements.

From a UNC System 4-Year Institution

  • Completion of the UNC System 4 Year Institution's General Education requirements

Note: Evaluated on a case-by-case basis. Students should communicate with Appalachian's General Education Office at 828.262.2028 or gened@appstate.edu to determine if General Education requirements will be met at Appalachian.

From an Out-of-State Community College

  • Associate in Arts/Associate in Science

Note: Evaluated on a case-by-case basis. Students should communicate with Appalachian's General Education Office at 828.262.2028 or gened@appstate.edu to determine if General Education requirements will be met at Applachian.

Second Degree Seeking Students

  • Bachelor's degree from a regionally-accredited 4-year institution

Note: Students who have completed a Bachelor's degree from a regionally-accredited 4-year institution will have GenEd marked as complete upon admission to Appalachian.
